Learning a new skill requires patience and dedication; you must remain attentive and eager to adapt. Perseverance in the face of challenges is essential. James Mburu, a broadcast journalism student at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication, immediately stood out to me.
James Mburu was born healthy and lived a typical childhood until a tragic road accident resulted in the amputation of both his hands. Suddenly, he faced a reality he had never imagined—one where overcoming disability became central to his journey. His parents, driven by a clear vision, were determined to help their son thrive in an ever-competitive world.

After the accident, James’s parents dedicated themselves to equipping him with the skills he needed to succeed. Recognizing that education was crucial, they enrolled him in schools alongside the other children. James, refusing to be defined by his disability, decided to transform his limitations into strengths. He learned to write with his toes, mastering a skill essential for communication in today’s fast-paced world.
I first met James at the Media Production Center of the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication, shortly after he had been admitted and was applying for his student ID card. I was immediately struck with awe and filled with questions: How would he navigate school life? How did he feel about it all? Moved by empathy, I helped him by handing over his paperwork to the officer processing student IDs.
As I spoke with James, I discovered his cheerful and optimistic nature. He shared his ambition to become a renowned media personality in Kenya and his deep passion for broadcast journalism. Our conversation also revealed that he is an avid football fan who supports Arsenal in the English Premier League.
James spoke clearly about his goals, explaining how joining the school has broadened his perspective and clarified his career path in journalism. He manages to keep up with his studies by communicating both orally and by writing with his toes. He is also proficient at constructing proper sentences and navigating computers using his legs.
James’s parents typically drop him off at school each morning and pick him up when classes end. Throughout the day, his classmates Mark and Lillian provide crucial support: Mark assists James with tasks like taking bathroom breaks and studying, while Lillian ensures he is well-fed and prepared to learn.
The school, through its Department of Information, has made accommodations to support James’s needs, creating an environment that enables him to pursue his academic goals. In the computer lab, he benefits from a specially modified desk that allows him to use the mouse and keyboard comfortably during classes.
James, though differently abled, continues to break barriers and redefine what it means to be capable by enrolling in a school with students of diverse abilities. He has embraced his disability and no longer sees it as a hindrance. James encourages others with disabilities not to hide but to seek help, pursue their dreams, and work towards their goals. He urges them to abandon a mindset of dependence and instead develop skills, nurture their talents, and live life fully like everyone else in society.
